Bohemia Rising includes 5 short films by Director Chris Largen. Each film tells a piece of the story: from building tension to healing music, you'll get the whole story. | The Burning of Fry St. | | (19 min) |
Property developers and outraged citizens clash over the fate of a cherished historic building on Fry Street. Wrecking crews gear up to demolish, protesters seize the building, and a man chains himself to the top floor for three days - while an arson plot develops. When flames engulf the structure, one activist stands accused of torching the building he fought to save. The documentary was directed by author/filmmaker Christopher Largen, who went to Fry Street three days before the fire, hoping to obtain demolition footage. Discovering the building seized by activists, he stayed with his personal camcorder, with no audio or lighting equipment, no production team, no tripods or dollies, and an official budget of $0. Largen's camera was acquired by law enforcement officials, who investigated the raw footage. Evidence becomes art in this gritty, impressionistic, nightmarish documentary exploring history, politics and identity. As a dazed community regroups after the arson blaze, a citizen returns to the crime scene to raise concerns about Denton residents who may have inhaled carcinogenic particles. Fry Street businessman Mike Sutton gets fed up with the Iraq war, and covers his car with names of fallen U.S. soldiers. The car attracts international media coverage, but when he runs out of room for more names, he enlists the aid of highschool students and a national cemetery. | A Walk Through Fry St. | | (9 min) |
Save Fry Street representative Jon Black takes viewers on a historic journey through the Bohemian community. In December 2007, Brave Combo performed live at Denton hotspot Dan's Silverleaf the night after receiving their 7th Grammy nomination. This single off their latest album was written in response to the turmoil brewing in the Fry St community. The performance was electric! And the video is a "barn-burner" that truly affirms the spirit of a community in flux.
